contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional Japanese talisman
顔 (Kao) is inspired by daruma, a talisman from Japan. Each region has a unique style and sizes vary but they usually have round bodies and faces with blank eyes. Daruma are traditionally used to make wishes;
the left eye is filled in when making a wish - the right eye is filled in after the wish comes true.
To me, daruma are symbols of human tenacity and beautiful examples of Japanese craft. I think it is magical that a simple, hand-made object can become the physical embodiment of its owner’s hopes and dreams. With 顔 (Kao),
I wanted to respect the origin of the craft while exploring non-traditional materials. A key feature of the daruma is the hand-drawn face, which I chose to preserve.
顔 (Kao) invites interaction and curiosity. Its smooth, rounded body feels inviting and comforting, creating an instinctive urge to hold it. The contrast is found in its textured face, crafted from steel, which delivers a cold, metallic touch. This juxtaposition of warm and cold in the form and materials not only enhances the sensory experience but also adds depth to Kao’s character.
When placed in a space, Kao exudes a mysterious yet familiar presence, effortlessly harmonizing with its surroundings while simultaneously beckoning people to engage. Its inviting shape encourages exploration, making it an irresistible focal point that draws in touch and attention. The design balances comfort and intrigue, creating a tactile encounter that leaves a lasting impression.
