contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional Japanese talisman

顔 (Kao) is a reinterpretation of the Daruma, the traditional Japanese talisman of tenacity and wish-making. While respecting the craft's origin (specifically the iconic hand-drawn face), Kao explores the intersection of tradition and modern materiality.

I view the Daruma as a physical vessel for human hope. Kao honors this by preserving the ritualistic elements but re-imagining the tactile experience.

The design juxtaposes a smooth, inviting body with a textured, cold steel face. This material contrast transforms the object into a sensory focal point; it is designed to be held, balancing the warmth of its curves with the weight and coolness of metal.
